I'll still be doing Book Sharing Monday through the summer. We're taking a break from the 'structured' learning of lap books and what not and will just be enjoying afternoons of reading. hence the reason I will still be doing the Book Sharing Monday's.
I've had this book for a while and read it to my two eldest when they were younger. I got it out for Esther but as I looked through it, I decided to read it out loud for all of us. It's an afternoon selection. It has some beautiful poetry, wonderful short stories, proverbs and wisdom that touch on topics from Table Manners, to caring for the elderly to using words wisely with those around us. The kids quiet down right away to listen and then they chat about the content afterward. I was rather surprised that they are so in to the book, particularly the poetry. It's not illustrated but then kids hear and analyze more then we give them credit for. I love how they discuss their different perspective about how the poetry or story affected them. There are selections from books like Anne of Green Gables, Pinocchio, The Secret Garden and the like. All wonderful stories but applicable to the every day grace or manner they are learning about. Good solid reading.
One of the sayings peeked a fair amount of interest: "The slip of the foot you may soon recover, but a slip of the tongue you may never get over." ~ Benjamin Franklin: Poor Richard's Almanac They talked about that one because they had recently fallen a lot from roller blades!
This is a great book and we'll continue reading it throughout the summer months.
